Default 'Dexter' execs: 'New theme is atonement'

The executive producers of Dexter have revealed that the theme of the upcoming fifth season will be "atonement".

According to E! Online, Sara Colleton and Chip Johannessen explained that a number of different people will help Dexter recover from the death of his wife Rita (Julie Benz).

"As [Dexter] is going through different stages of grief, he doesn't know what he's feeling," Colleton said. "And there will be different characters that'll come in and interact, [and] along the way help him... [atone]."

She continued: "The central idea of Dexter is so strong and so provocative, we feel there is a new human territory to push Dexter through that minefield. Whether he will get caught is what brings the audience to us."

Meanwhile, Johannessen hinted that Quinn (Desmond Harrington) may become suspicious about Dexter.

"It's going to look different [from Doakes in season two], because he has actual information," he said. "[Quinn] isn't a bull in a china shop, he's in the bullpen. [But] he's going to have a much more difficult time pushing forward with this investigation."

Dexter returns for a new season on September 26 on Showtime.
